CHAPTER SIX
CRESSIDA SPENT most of the next day wondering how she should behave towards Giles van der Teile when she saw him next, but she need not have worried; there was no sign of him, nor on the following day either. He was due to see some patients on the day after that; Doctor Herrima had mentioned it at breakfast, a statement which had caused her to make a great many mistakes in her typing that morning, and sent her upstairs before lunch to redo her face and pile her shining hair even more neatly than it was already, and this was a waste too, for at lunch she was toldâby Doctor van Blom this timeâthat their partner had been called away to Utrecht and wouldnât be back in time to see any of his patients that afternoon.
Cressida swallowed disappointment with her soup and spent the whole afternoon working with a ferocity which was quite remarkable. At this rate, Doctor van Blom told her happily, the book would be ready in plenty of time to meet the publisherâs date, and he added: âBut I shall be sorry too, my dear, for we have enjoyed having you here with us, and you have been invaluable, for you are such a sensible young woman and seem able to turn your hand to anything.â
She thanked him for the compliment and wished for the hundredth time that her command of the Dutch language was sufficient for her to suggest that she might remain with them as a surgery nurse and secretary, for they certainly needed someoneâ¦she had done her best to pick up a few basic sentences, and with Juffrouw Naaldâs help and the aid of a dictionary, she hadnât done so badly, but she doubted if she knew enough to cope with the daily demands of a busy surgery.
She had managed well enough during the brief period when they had all had âflu, but that had been rather a different matter. It just wouldnât work, she admitted regretfully, and turned back resolutely to her desk, where she stayed, pausing only for a cup of tea. By dinner time she was quite worn out, which was a good thing, for she slept the moment her head touched the pillow. But her waking thought was of Giles; it was stupid, she told herself crossly, that she was unable to clear her head of the man; it was a complete waste of time thinking about him. He was rude and arrogant and she suspected that she amused him, although she wasnât sure whyâand yet he was the only man in her life and she knew that there would never be another. He could be as cross as two sticks and look down his nose at her and not care if she went supperless to bed; it made no difference.
She dressed and went down to the study, where she attacked the last chapter with Doctor van Blom, and became so immersed in it that they were late
